Amboy was founded as a mining site and got active before the railroad gave it a stop. Even today there is still a busy railroad running through the desert in Amboy. Roy's is located on Historic Route 66 in Amboy, California. The town of Amboy itself is in the Mojave desert. The site of Roy's has become an icon for a lonely desert gas stop due to the multiple appearances of Roy's in movies. Currently the town of Amboy is owned by Albert Okura, who also owns the Juan Pollo restaurant chain. Fortunately he is dedicated to preserving Amboy in a 1950's look and feel and will try to restore the site to it's former glory.

Part of the 1986 motion picture The Hitcher with Rutger Hauer was filmed in Amboy
The 2006 Pixar film Cars takes place mostly in an abandoned, former Route 66 boomtown called "Radiator Springs" that was based on Amboy.

Why? It was not possible to meet for lunch at historic Musso & Frank Grill (at 6667 Hollywood Blvd) the oldest restaurant in Hollywood and sit in the dark wood booths where F. Scott Fitzgerald and Charlie Chaplin once dined, and soak up the Raymond Chandler ambiance. It was closed on Sundays.

Video Interview with Anthony Slide (Author on the right in the photo taken in his screening room) on his book Ravished Armenia and the Story of Aurora Mardiganian

The 1919 Film: Ravished Armenia: The Story of Aurora Mardiganian, The Christian Girl Who Lived Through The Great Massacres (Kingsfield Press, New York), which chronicled the suffering of 17-year-old Aurora Mardiganian (starring as herself) and other Armenians at the hand of the Young Turks in the Ottoman Empire. Ravished Armenia depicts not only deportations and massacres but also the sexual violence implied by its title—a significant part of the violence to be sure, but overemphasized. It was this aspect that the press fixated on, and that excited public interest. The New York Times wrote of "Turkish Harems" and "Turkish Slave Markets," and the Los Angeles Evening Express saw the film's model in the "conventional Arabian Nights slave market and harem scene," wherein, "'with other naked girls, pretty Aurora Mardiganian was sold for eighty-five cents.'" After the deportations, massacres and rapes, Ravished Armenia ends with Aurora's arrival at the American mission in Tiflis.

DATELAND PALMS RESTAURANT

Established just north of the Mexico border on Interstate 8 between Yuma and Phoenix in the Arizona desert,in the early 1920's, Dateland was originally a water stop along the railroad lines. Back then, the old steam engines had to stop every 5 to 6 miles for water. During the 1940's, Dateland Arizona was the site for two of General Patton's desert training camps, Camp Horn and Camp Hyder. In addition, in 1942, three airstrips were built here in Dateland for training B52 Bombers. Unfortunately, the airfields were only utilized for about two months. The buildings that were built for the airstrips were later used as part of an Italian internment camp.

The Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is a palm extensively cultivated for its edible fruit. Due to its long history of cultivation for fruit, its exact native distribution is unknown, but probably originated somewhere in the desert oases of northern Africa.

Dates (Arabic: تمر - Tamr) have been a staple food of the Middle East for thousands of years. They are believed to have originated around the Persian Gulf, and have been cultivated since ancient times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, possibly as early as 6000 BC. There is archaeological evidence of date cultivation in eastern Arabia in 4,000 BC. In later times, Arabs spread dates around northern Africa and into Spain, and dates were introduced into California by the Spaniards in 1765, around Mission San Ignacio.

Knoxville. Frederic Remington sculpture
"Bronco Buster/1895"

Frederic Remington [American Painter and Sculptor, 1861-1909] During a career that spanned less than twenty-five years, Frederic Remington produced a huge body of work illustration, painting, sculpture, fiction and non-fiction - the vast majority of it centered on the West. His influence in shaping the West of the popular imagination cannot be overstated.

Remington was born in Canton in northern New York on October 4, 1861. His boyhood fostered a lifelong love of horses and the outdoors, while his father's tales of action as a cavalry officer in the Civil War inspired a passion for things military that found a western focus with the battle of the Little Bighorn during the nation's Centennial Year, 1876. At the age of fourteen Remington was smitten with the urge to go see the West for himself.

As a member of a prominent family, Remington was expected to graduate from college, prepared for a career in business, but spent only a year and a half at Yale University playing football and studying art. After his father's death, he traveled to Montana in 1881, and experienced his first impression of the West. In 1883, he moved to Kansas where he made an unsuccessful attempt at sheep ranching. He made many trips out West and occasionally accompanied the U.S. Cavalry on patrol along the Southwest frontier.

Bronze "Bronco Buster" Amon Carter Museum, Texas

"'Art', wrote Frederic Remington in 1905, 'is a she-devil of a mistress, and if at times in earlier days she would not even stoop to my way of thinking, I have persevered and will so continue.'
